About the Role

Hold a current license issued by the State Board of Nursing in South Carolina to practice as a professional registered nurse. Provide healthcare services to students and staff, including assessment, first aid, medication administration, and emergency care as needed. Offer health education programs and resources to students, staff, and parents to promote healthy lifestyles, disease prevention, and overall well-being. Maintain accurate and confidential health records for all students, ensuring compliance with relevant laws and regulations.

Assess and manage illnesses, injuries, and chronic health conditions among students and staff, including developing individualized healthcare plans when necessary. Monitor and ensure compliance with immunization requirements, keeping records up-to-date. Conduct health screenings as required by state regulations, including vision, hearing, and scoliosis screenings.

Be prepared to respond to medical emergencies within the school, coordinate emergency care, and communicate with parents and emergency services as needed. Administer and oversee the administration of medications to students according to physician orders and school policies. Promote a healthy and safe school environment by participating in the development of policies and practices that support physical and emotional well-being.

Collaborate with teachers, administrators, counselors, and other healthcare professionals to address health-related concerns affecting student learning. Stay current on healthcare practices and regulations through professional development and continuing education.

Report suspected child abuse or neglect as required by law and follow mandated reporting procedures.

Maintain strict confidentiality of student health information, ensuring compliance with privacy laws.

Requirements

The School Nurse, in compliance with Section 59-10-215 of the South Carolina Code of Laws, is a licensed professional registered nurse responsible for providing healthcare services within a specific school. The school nurse's duties and responsibilities are determined by the school principal in accordance with South Carolina nursing laws and regulations. The school nurse ensures the health and well-being of students and staff, manages health-related concerns, and promotes a safe and healthy school environment.


  • Current licensure as a professional registered nurse in South Carolina.

  • Strong knowledge of nursing laws and regulations in South Carolina.

  • Excellent assessment, communication, and interpersonal skills.

  • Compassion and the ability to work effectively with students, parents, and school staff.

  • CPR and First Aid certification.

  • Previous nursing experience, especially in a school or pediatric setting, is preferred.

  • The role may require occasional evening and weekend hours for school-related events or emergencies.

  • Interaction with students of varying age groups, parents, teachers, and administrative staff is a fundamental aspect of this role.

  • Additional duties may be assigned by school administration.
