About the Role

The School Nutrition Assistant (Part-time) plays a critical role in ensuring that students have access to nutritious meals and a clean, safe dining environment within the school. This position requires attention to detail, a commitment to food safety, and a friendly demeanor when interacting with students and other staff members. The School Nutrition Assistant supports the school's nutrition program by assisting in the preparation, distribution, and clean-up of meals to students.

Assist in the preparation of meals, including cooking, baking, and assembling food items in accordance with established menus and recipes. Serve meals to students during breakfast, lunch, and other designated meal periods, ensuring portion control and adherence to nutrition guidelines. Handle payments for meals, including processing cash or electronic transactions accurately and maintaining appropriate records. Ensure that meals are presented attractively and in a clean, sanitary manner. Be aware of common food allergens and dietary restrictions, and assist students in making appropriate meal choices.

Maintain a clean and organized kitchen area, including washing dishes, sanitizing surfaces, and cleaning equipment. Assist in maintaining a clean and orderly dining area, including wiping down tables and ensuring the availability of utensils, napkins, and condiments.

Follow all food safety and sanitation guidelines, including proper hand washing, temperature control, and safe food handling practices. Ensure compliance with all federal, state, and local regulations related to school nutrition programs.

Interact with students in a friendly and helpful manner, assisting with meal selections and addressing any questions or concerns. Communicate effectively with kitchen staff, school personnel, and students to ensure efficient meal service.

Assist in maintaining accurate inventory records, including monitoring stock levels and notifying supervisors when supplies need replenishing. Maintain records of meal counts, sales, and other relevant data as required by school nutrition program regulations.

Requirements

  • Previous experience in food service or customer service is a plus.

  • Knowledge of food safety and sanitation practices is preferred.

  • Basic math skills for handling cash transactions and maintaining accurate records.

  • Ability to stand for extended periods, lift and carry supplies, and work in a fast-paced environment.

  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, especially when interacting with students.

  • Part-time hours, typically aligned with school meal schedules.

  • The School Nutrition Assistant works in the school cafeteria or kitchen area.

  • May require occasional flexibility to cover special events or additional meal periods.
