About the Role
The School Nutrition Coordinator is responsible for overseeing the planning, implementation, and management of the school nutrition program. This position requires strong leadership, regulatory knowledge, and a commitment to providing students with access to healthy and balanced meals while adhering to budget constraints and regulatory requirements.
Develop and oversee the creation of nutritious and appealing meal plans that meet federal nutrition standards and align with dietary guidelines. Coordinate the preparation, distribution, and service of meals to students, ensuring efficient and sanitary food handling practices.
Develop and manage the budget for the school nutrition program, including monitoring expenses, revenue, and cost-saving strategies. Oversee the purchasing of food and supplies, negotiate contracts with vendors, and ensure compliance with procurement regulations. Stay current with federal, state, and local regulations related to school nutrition programs and ensure adherence to all relevant laws. Direct and supervise school nutrition staff, including cooks, kitchen staff, and support personnel, providing guidance, training, and evaluations. Facilitate ongoing training and professional development for nutrition staff to enhance their skills and knowledge.
Conduct regular assessments of meal offerings, seeking input from students, parents, and nutrition experts, and make adjustments as needed that students with dietary restrictions or food allergies are accommodated with safe and appropriate meal options.
Foster positive relationships with parents, teachers, administrators, and community members, addressing questions, concerns, and feedback. Develop and implement nutrition education and promotion programs to encourage healthy eating habits among students.
Maintain accurate records related to meal counts, financial transactions, and program statistics, and provide reports to district or state authorities as required. Ensure accountability in financial management, meal planning, and program evaluation through regular audits and reviews.
Utilize nutrition software and technology tools for menu planning, inventory management, and data analysis.
Requirements
Knowledge of federal and state regulations related to school nutrition programs, including the National School Lunch Program and School Breakfast Program.
Experience in food service management, nutrition program coordination, or a related field.
Strong leadership and supervisory skills.
Excellent communication and interpersonal skills for working with diverse stakeholders.
Knowledge of menu planning, dietary guidelines, and food safety practices.
Proficiency in using nutrition software and data analysis tools.
Normal business hours, with flexibility to attend evening meetings or events as needed.
Collaboration with school administrators, kitchen staff, vendors, and community partners.
Additional duties as assigned by school administration.
